Pediatric Bariatric Surgery
There is much concern over the increasing prevalence of obesity and obesity-related illnesses among adolescents in the U.S. In a highly select group of adolescent patients, bariatric surgery may provide the only practical alternative for achieving long-term weight loss. In carefully selected adolescents, bariatric surgery can allow the young patient the opportunity of a healthier lifestyle, thereby avoiding the devastating physical and psychological effects associated with lifelong obesity.
It is critical for adolescent patients and families considering a bariatric procedure to undergo extensive preoperative evaluation by a skilled multidisciplinary team including, medicine, surgery, psych, and nutrition. In addition, these patients must attempt 6 months of aggressive dietary and exercise therapy with good compliance before they can be considered candidates for a bariatric surgical procedure.
CBSI has the multidisciplinary program to properly direct these patients, and if needed, the expertise to perform the appropriate bariatric surgical procedure. In addition, we provide long-term follow-up to ensure compliance and guidance with issues unique to the adolescent patient.
